Trump's 'back and forth' policy... Nobel Prize, prestigious universities were no exception [Now is the climate crisis]

US President Donald Trump's "hitch-hush" policy has been applied not only to tariffs but also to climate change policies without exception. Nobel Prize-winning scholars and prestigious universities could not escape his sword.

Trump cut $4 million in climate research funds from Princeton University in the United States. The reason is very provocative. The White House claimed that the reason for the cut was that "students are exposed to 'climate anxiety' and 'exaggerated climate threats' due to the university's research."

Princeton University is considered a prestigious Ivy League university. Among the professors at Princeton University's Earth System Modeling Laboratory, a partner institution of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is Chief Meteorologist Shukuro Manabe, who won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on global climate change simulations.

According to reports from the New York Times and other sources, the White House has reportedly determined that Princeton University's research on topics such as sea level rise, coastal flooding, and global warming "promotes exaggerated and unrealistic climate threats." The

U.S. Department of Commerce said that Princeton University's collaboration with NOAA "promotes exaggerated and unrealistic climate threats and is fueling a phenomenon called 'climate anxiety,'" which "is increasing significantly among American youth."

However, there was no specific basis for what "climate anxiety" is being fueled or how many youths are anxious. The funding was canceled based on a one-sided interpretation. To put it in Trump's terms, it's like saying, "If I say so, then so be it."

The budget-related programs being cut this time include climate change education programs for students from kindergarten to high school and two five-year research projects.

Dr. Rick Spinrad, who served as NOAA administrator during the Biden administration, said in an interview with American media outlets that "Princeton's forecasts are critical to American agriculture, energy, and transportation," and criticized that "President Trump is ignoring Dr. Manabe's climate modeling research."

Trump is not stopping there. He has also put the brakes on related laws that hold fossil fuel companies accountable for climate change. He signed an executive order to force states and cities to stop enacting the laws.

NOAA was hit hard as soon as Trump took office. It was hit hardest by the attacks on Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. Hundreds of employees were laid off.

In front of NOAA headquarters, protesters have been warning that "the flow of important weather and climate information is being disrupted by cuts (such as preliminary and personnel cuts)" and that "fishery-related regulations that prevent over-exploitation of the ocean are at risk."
