Sending sound into space

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, President Lee Kwang-hyung) collaborated with media artist Professor Lee Jin-joon of the Graduate School of Culture Technology and global artist G-Dragon to launch a 'Space Sound Transmission Project' based on media art at the KAIST Space Research Institute on the 9th.

This project was proposed as part of the 'AI Entertech Research Center' being promoted by KAIST and Galaxy Corporation. This project will be the world's first to transmit messages and sound sources from singer G-Dragon (Kwon Ji-yong), who is an artist affiliated with Galaxy Corporation

and a visiting professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST, into space. This is a convergence project that combines science, technology, art, and popular music, and is a new form of 'space cultural content' experiment that connects KAIST's cutting-edge space technology, Professor Lee Jin-joon's media art, and G-Dragon's voice and sound source (HOME SWEET HOME).

This collaboration was planned with the theme of 'emotional signals that expand the inner universe of humans to the outer space.' The image of G-Dragon's iris was augmented through AI as an inner window symbolizing his uniqueness and identity. The new song 'Home Sweet Home' was combined with an audio message containing emotional vibrations.

The symbolic performance of the inner universe being transmitted to outer space through the next-generation small satellite developed by the KAIST Space Research Institute was completed.

Professor Jin-Jun Lee's cinematic media art piece 'Iris' was unveiled at the site. This piece was screened using projection mapping on the 13m space antenna of the KAIST Space Research Institute, the first of its kind in the world.

This video was created using generative AI technology based on an image of G-Dragon's iris, and combined with sound using data from the bell sound of the Emile Bell, which holds 1,000 years of history, it presents an emotional artistic experience that transcends time and space.

Professor Lee Jin-joon said, "The iris is a symbol that reflects inner emotions and identity, to the point that it is called the 'mirror of the soul,' and this work tried to express 'the infinite universe seen through the inner self of humanity' through G-Dragon's gaze."

KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung said, "KAIST is a place that always supports new imaginations and challenges," and "We will strive to ensure that creative research that no one has thought of can continue in the future, like this project that combines science, technology, and art."
