Pattern-finding jobs most likely to be replaced by AI

It was predicted that the occupation most likely to be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) is 'pattern specialist' at present and 'logistics clerk' in three years.

Due to the influence of generative AI, the replacement rate of occupations requiring creative thinking was relatively high, while the replacement rate of occupations requiring physical activity and skilled skills was relatively low.

The report 'Job Replacement and Changes in White-Collar Jobs by AI' released by the Korea Employment Information Service on the 13th analyzed the job replacement rate by AI for 520 occupations listed on the Korea Employment Information Service at present (2024) and three years from now in 2027.

The average job replacement rate of the 520 occupations in 2024 was 38.69%. The minimum value with the lowest possibility of replacement was 0.00% (professional gamer), and the maximum value with the highest possibility of replacement was 71.65% (pattern specialist). As of 2024, the occupation group with the highest rate of job replacement by AI was one that mainly performed work activities related to 'searching, collecting, analyzing, processing information and data, and estimating characteristics based on these', such as pattern writers.

After three years, the average value nearly doubled to 66.71%. In addition, the minimum value increased to 3.23% (conductor) and the maximum value increased to 94.17% (logistics clerk).

Occupations that mainly perform jobs that produce new ideas or content based on 'creative thinking', such as broadcast writers, game graphic designers

, and voice actors, also had high replacement rates. This can be interpreted as the influence of the development of generative AI. On the other hand, occupations that require 'physical activity and skilled skills', such as professional gamers, professional athletes, ship assemblers, dairy farmers, and boiler installers and maintainers, had low AI replacement rates.

When dividing jobs into low-risk (job replacement rate of less than 30%), medium-risk (30% to 70%), and high-risk (70% or more) based on job replacement rate, the number of high-risk groups increased from 1 to 226 in three years. On the other hand, the number of low-risk groups decreased sharply from 120 to 8.

When divided into white-collar and non-white-collar jobs, white-collar jobs are likely to be more rapidly and strongly affected by AI than non-white-

collar jobs in three years. The report analyzed that this is because white-collar jobs are largely based on cognitive abilities such as recording, collecting, observing, analyzing, and evaluating data and information, which are characteristics and strengths of AI.

However, current results or estimates do not necessarily come true as is.

In the same study in 2016, among the 406 major occupations in Korea, concrete workers, butchers and slaughtermen, and rubber and plastic product assemblers were selected as occupations with a high probability of being replaced by automation using AI and robotics. However, the current replacement rate for concrete workers is 29.1%, and that for butchers and slaughtermen is 24.0%, which is in the low-risk group.

On the other hand, occupations in the arts such as painters and sculptors, photographers and photographers, writers, and related experts, which were considered to have a low probability of replacement at the time, are all classified as medium-risk.
