According to Box Office Mojo, an American movie box office aggregation site, "The Life of Jesus," which was released in about 3,200 theaters in North America the day before, ranked second at the box office with ticket sales of $7,012,750 (about 10 billion won) in just one day.
Hollywood media outlet Variety reported that the animation is expected to earn about $18 million (about 25.7 billion won) in its first week of release.
It also evaluated this phenomenon as unusual. It means that a Korean-produced animation has succeeded at the box office, beating out new films from major Hollywood studios such as "The Amateur" and "The Drop."
This work is a theatrical 3D animation created by Korea's Mopac Studio. Jang Sung-ho, CEO of Mopac, was in charge of directing, screenplay, and production, and cinematographer Kim Woo-hyung produced.
It was adapted from 'The Life of Our Lord', written by British author Charles Dickens for his children. Hollywood celebrities Oscar Isaac, Pierce Brosnan, Kenneth Branner, Uma Thurman, and Mark Hamill lent their voices to the film.
Hollywood media is also paying attention to Angel Studios, which is in charge of distributing the animation in North America.
Angel Studios, which is classified as a small independent distributor in Hollywood, previously set a box office record in 2023 with the low-budget thriller 'The Sound of Freedom', which earned $184 million (about 262.4 billion won) in ticket sales in North America alone.
