"13,000 units sold to the US military..." Samsung Galaxy cannot be sold to the Korean military

"We've been supplying to the US military for 10 years, but not yet to our military."

This is what a Samsung Electronics official said at the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strong Army and Warrior Platform Innovation Seminar and Exhibition' held in the lobby of the National Assembly Members' Hall on the 24th.

Samsung Electronics exhibited the tactical smartphones 'Galaxy S23 Tactical (TE) Edition' and 'XCover 6 Pro' models that are being supplied to the US military at an exhibition hosted by the office of People Power Party Representative Yoo Yong-won on this day.

Both models support laser rangefinders, external GPS connections, tactical radios, and stealth mode that blocks wireless signals. They are also equipped with displays that allow touchscreens even when wearing military gloves.

As they are military products, they also support 'night vision mode' that protects the eyes when wearing night vision goggles, and '5G band lock mode' that only connects to certified 5G networks.

Samsung Electronics supplies 12,000 to 13,000 of these products to the US military annually. The price per unit is $1,300 to $1,500. A Samsung Electronics official explained, "We are supplying it after customizing it for the US military."

The reason Samsung Electronics is selling the 'Military Galaxy' to the US military but not to the ROK military is due to differences in security policies.

The US military allows software (SW) security, but the ROK military is only capable of hardware security.

According to the 'Defense Security Work Instructions,' our military cannot use it for military operations unless it uses a hardware-based security system such as a security chip insertion. This means that in the event of an emergency, the physical encryption key must be able to be removed from the device and destroyed. A

A Samsung Electronics official expressed regret, saying, "We have been supplying products to the US military for 10 years, and it would be nice if we could supply them to our military as well."

Previously, the ROK military also piloted the '2020 Galaxy S20 TE' model with the military-only business network 'Amos', but it was reported that it was not used for tactical purposes.
