Large and small launch vehicle companies have joined forces to develop future space transportation technology.

Perigee Aerospace (Perigee) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Aerospace on the 26th to establish a cooperative system between the two companies for the development of space transportation technology.

Through this agreement, the two companies plan to share technological and sales capabilities to strengthen space launch vehicle development capabilities and continue strategic cooperation. The Hanwha Aerospace delegation, which visited the Perigee Rocket Development Complex (RDC) in Okcheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, signed the business agreement and toured the development status of the space launch vehicle 'Blue Whale 1 (BW1)' currently under development by Perigee and various research facilities, and discussed the direction of cooperation.

Hanwha Aerospace is the system integration company for the national key launch vehicle 'Nuriho' together with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute starting in 2022. It is participating in the construction of engines and test facilities. The fourth launch of Nuriho is scheduled for November this year.

In 2024, it was also selected as the private system integration company for the 'next-generation launch vehicle' that will launch the lunar lander in 2032.

Perigee is developing a space launch vehicle based on a liquid methane engine. The 3-ton (t) turbopump-type liquid methane engine developed in-house has also been recognized as a national strategic technology. It is expected that high technological synergy will be created through the collaboration between the two companies.

Perigee, which focuses on the development of small space launch vehicles, has recently achieved results such as the successful vertical takeoff and landing test for launch vehicle reuse. Currently, it plans to test flight verification capabilities through a suborbital test launch vehicle utilizing the upper stage of 'Blue Whale 1'. This launch vehicle will also be launched equipped with a liquid methane engine.

Lee Jun-won, head of Hanwha Aerospace's space business division, said, "Through this agreement, we have established a mutual cooperation system with Perigee," and "We expect to be able to contribute to the growth of the domestic space industry based on the technological capabilities of both companies."

Shin Dong-yoon, CEO of Perigee, said, "Perigee's business expansion will accelerate through cooperation with Hanwha Aerospace, which has long-standing technological expertise in the space industry," and "This cooperation will be an important opportunity to lead Perigee's rapid growth and expand its position as a next-generation private space launch vehicle company."
