SK Hynix Starts Construction of First Fab in Yongin Semiconductor Cluster

SK Hynix has broken ground on its first fab (semiconductor production plant) in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in Gyeonggi Province.



According to the SK Hynix Newsroom on the 25th, SK Hynix broke ground on the first fab of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster the day before.

SK Hynix had originally planned to break ground on its first fab next month, but the start of construction was brought forward as Yongin City approved the construction earlier than scheduled. The



Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is a semiconductor industrial complex being built in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si on a site measuring a total of 4.15 million m2 (approximately 1.26 million pyeong), including the SK Hynix fab of approximately 600,000 pyeong, a small and medium-sized enterprise cooperation complex of 140,000 pyeong, and an infrastructure site of 120,000 pyeong.



SK Hynix plans to build a total of four fabs sequentially, with the first fab scheduled for completion in May 2027.



SK Hynix's Yongin Campus will serve as a production base for next-generation DRAM memory, including HBM, and will respond to the rapidly growing demand for AI memory semiconductors in a timely manner, thereby leading the company's mid- to long-term growth foundation. SK Hynix



said, "We will also play a role in enhancing the competitiveness of the semiconductor ecosystem in Korea together with approximately 50 semiconductor small and medium-sized companies in the Yongin Cluster."



SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited the Yongin Cluster site, where the site preparation work is underway, in September 2023 and emphasized, "The Yongin Cluster is the most planned and strategically promoted project in SK Hynix's history," adding, "We need to take on a challenge that goes beyond what we have been doing so far." In



July of last year, SK Hynix decided to invest approximately KRW 9.4 trillion in the construction of the first fab of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster through a board of directors resolution.



Meanwhile, the first shovel has been turned for the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster 1, but the groundbreaking ceremony date has not yet been set. SK Hynix said, "The official groundbreaking ceremony date has not been set yet."
