Samsung Wallet is a service that combines credit cards, debit cards, QR/barcode payments, point cards, and airline boarding passes in a single app.
In particular, Samsung Electronics is the first smartphone manufacturer to support QR/barcode payments for PayPay, a popular service in Japan.
Samsung Wallet can be downloaded from the Galaxy Store and is free. Anyone with a Galaxy smartphone released in Japan after 2021 can use Samsung Wallet.
The background to Samsung Electronics providing Samsung Wallet service for Galaxy smartphones sold in Japan is the rapidly growing local simple payment market. This is
because, contrary to Japan's nickname of 'the country of analog', the simple payment market has been growing rapidly in recent years. According to data from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, cashless payments will account for more than 40% of all payment methods in 2023.
In particular, among cashless payments, the proportion of QR code and barcode payments based on smartphone apps was high.
As of August 2024, PayPay, supported by Samsung Wallet, will have 65 million users, which is about half of Japan's population of 130 million.
Samsung Electronics explained, "Samsung Wallet can be run right from the lock screen with your fingertips," and "Japanese Galaxy users can now use the service to make payments with their smartphones at once."
