SK Shielders (CEO Hong Won-pyo) announced this in the 2024 Q4 KARA (Korean Anti Ransomware Alliance) Ransomware Trend Report released on the 27th.
Among them, the RansomHub group was the most active, causing 240 cases of damage, and the Akira group was found to have distributed ransomware by exploiting vulnerabilities in backup solutions. By
industry, the damages were in the manufacturing industry (421 cases), followed by distribution, trade, and transportation (197 cases), and IT and communications (189 cases). Attacks targeting social infrastructure such as medical institutions and airports are also increasing, and the healthcare industry is emerging as a new target. More than 1,500 patient records were leaked from a medical institution in Texas, USA, and 3 TB of data was stolen from a Mexican airport operator.
The report pointed out that cyberattack methods are becoming more diverse with the recent emergence of new ransomware groups such as 'FunkSec', 'Sarcoma', and 'SafePay'. They are utilizing new techniques such as △generative AI-based customized attacks, △information theft through phishing websites, △attacks on multiple operating systems, and △exploitation of leaked source code.
Kim Byung-moo, head of the cybersecurity division (vice president) at SK Shielders, said, "As ransomware attacks are spreading to core infrastructure such as manufacturing, the medical field, and educational institutions, there are concerns about large-scale sensitive information leaks." He added, "As ransomware attacks have recently become a threat to the entire industry rather than a problem for individual companies, SK Shielders will support the entire industry to proactively respond to attacks together through ransomware-specific solutions including MDR."
